Backdoor Beautification Project - Cuero, Texas
February 2017 by Marie Oehlerking-Read, Project Designer
Backdoors are important in Cuero. They are one of the first things you see when entering the town from the south on Highway 183. When you park your car in the public parking lot, the backs of the buildings on Main Street are what you seen. Because of this, the Cuero Main Street Design Committee started a project to target those rear facades. In Fall of 2016, the Main Street manager approached me about creating a large rendering showing what the backs of the buildings might look like when they were cleaned up. Through the winter we worked on the project and produced the rendering and instruction handout below. Through the Spring, Cuero will promote the program and encourage property owners to use facade grant funds to spruce up their back facades.
Cleaning up the facades doesn't have to be expensive or time consuming. Simply removing plants and grim can make a big difference. Adding a fresh coat of paint (NOT on unpainted masonry, of course) and business signage can really revive the appearance of any building. Download the instruction guide and rendering set below and took a look for yourself. This idea can be adapted to any city. Contact the design staff to figure out how you can get started today.
