BACK-IN PARKING

POSTING:
Happy Thursday ALL! The City of Ennis adopted our new Downtown Master Plan back in March. Back-In Angle Parking is a component. This will probably not be rolled out for another year or two but we are hearing a little moaning about it already. I'm looking for feedback on back-in angle parking; the good, the bad and the ugly. I know about Congress in Austin and 6th Street. I'm looking for feedback from communities that are similar to Ennis in size. Here’s some information about our back-in parking in downtown San Marcos.

We picked up over 80 spaces by doing the back in angled parking. Instead of a standard 45 degree for head in parking, the angle is 30 degrees. You can easily see on-coming traffic, bikes, etc., when you pull out. Honestly, it’s easier than parallel parking, and we all had to do that to get a drivers’ license. You do the first movement, like a parallel, then just keep backing up, instead of doing the straighten, turn, straighten move. But, there is stilla lot of griping and gnashing of teeth here—and a lot of people cut across the yellow line and park head in anyway, then gripe that they can’t see to pull back out.

I like angle parking, but not back in angle parking because I personally can't back into a spot straight. What's the rationale? Is it supposed to be safer? Just curious!
